Scientific Workshop Russian poetry reception trip in Vietnam

2026 is marked as the year of Vietnam-Russia cooperation in science and education. In addition, November is also the anniversary of the Russian October Revolution (July 11th) and Vietnamese Culture Day (24/11th). In that context, the organization of a Russian literature seminar will contribute to the strong promotion of cultural and literary exchanges, thereby further strengthening the ties of solidarity, attachment and mutual understanding between the two peoples.

Russian poetry is an important part of world literature received in Vietnam. Prior to 1945, Vietnamese readers mostly knew Russian literature through French and Chinese translations, in which the novel stood out more than poetry. The period 1945-1975, thanks to Vietnam-Soviet relations, Russian-Soviet poetry was translated directly from Russian and widely introduced, especially in the North. After 1975, Russian poetry continued to be translated, taught, and disseminated; from the late 1980s and 1990s, reception expanded to the poets of the Silver Age and to the once little-known voices.

In the process, the historical context, the role of translators - poets and the aesthetic needs of the Vietnamese readers have influenced the selection, translation and interpretation of Russian poetry. Russian poetry also left its mark in Vietnamese poetry, literary teaching and cultural life. This review of the journey of reception contributes to clarifying the process of cultural exchange and transformation, in line with the spirit of the Political Ministry's Resolution No. 80 of 7 January 2026 on cultural development, which emphasizes the inheritance, promotion of traditional cultural values of the peoples and selective reception of world's cultural icons.
